Tax exemption?
Q. I switched my tax papers at work so I was exempt. I needed the extra money for tuition. At the time, I was told I could switch it back for the following paycheck. I went to switch it back today and the lady in charge said that from now on they can only change it twice a year, July and January. I don't want to have to pay a lot in taxes, is there any law or anything about this? And if it really isnt possible to change, if I take the money that would have been taken out and save it in an account, will that be about how much I will owe in taxes??? I can't afford to pay a ton in taxes, please help! I am only 19, this is the first year I have to do taxes. The $200 extra made it so I had enough to pay tution without loans. A. I believe that you can change withholding any time you want. Just a note. you can only claim exempt if you had no tax liability in the previous year and expect to have no tax liability this year. (read the statement above your signature) If you don't meet these qualifications, you committed perjury.

How do you obtain tax exemption without being a nonprofit organization?
Q. Our Home and School association has a tax exempt ID, yet we are not a non-profit organization. How is that possible? How would we have obtained tax exemption? No one in the organization seems to know. What criteria could be used for obtaining a tax exempt ID? And this isn't as important right now, but how do you go about becoming a nonprofit organization? Did you ever hear of a Home and School Association being such? Thanks.
Asked by my4potatoes - Mon Mar 26 11:34:01 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. That depends on what you mean by "non-profit." Some organizations are tax-exempt, and some are also able to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. As the first link explains, the IRS permits or denies "tax-exempt" status for qualifying organizations, but "non-profit" status is a label used by state laws. Federal tax-exempt status can be requested by filing Form 1023. You may be able to verify your associations status by doing a search. If you know their exact name or (better yet) their EIN, you can look them up on sites like Melissadata.com (see below); if your organization comes up, it will say what IRS status they have (such as 501(c)(3)). Hopefully the below links will help clarify things for you. Good luck! :-)

Does one get tax exemption for a mortgage on a home owned abroad?
Q. Hi, I am a "resident alien". My home country is India. Do I get an exemption or tax credit for the mortgage I pay on my home in India? Indian tax laws gave me an exemption. US tax laws do so if I had a home here. But its not clear whether I can get an exemption if the home is in India. Thanks Ankush
Asked by rock7565 - Thu Feb 14 22:41:47 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You may include the interest you paid on Form Schedule A, Itemized deductions. The mortgage interest is deductible if it is secured by your main home, or your second home. It must be a mortgage in your name. Only the interest paid is deductible. There is no requirement that the home must be in the USA. If you do not own a home in the US, then there is no mortgage interest on your main home. Your second home would be in India, and your mortgage interest is deductible. If your home in India, is rented to others, then you need to follow other rules. It is considered business property if you are renting it to others while you live here in the US. The real estate taxes that you paid are generally also deductible on Schedule A Be sure… [cont.]

How can one claim tax exemption on housing loan repayment?
Q. If self and spouse are joint borrowers then can each avail the full exemption. Can part exemption is allowed e.g. Husband takes the full interest part of loan repayment and part payment of the principal. While remaining part of the principal is availed by wife for tax exemption. Is this allowed and if yes under which rule of income tax?
Asked by Sameer D - Thu Jan 22 01:15:10 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not really. The interest and the Principal split is dependent on the amount paid from your individual pockets and the exemption ration is also the same ideally. The problem is tracked against the loan account and not with respect to who pays how much. The aforementioned is the ideal case. Since you wife is also earning and she is part of the loan, there is no reason why both of you should not claim partly.

Can a Foreign National Enjoy Tax Exemption if He Makes Donation to Indian Charity?
Q. If a foreign national makes a donation to an NGO listed in India, can he enjoy tax exemption on his donation?
Asked by Manmohan - Wed Dec 16 06:15:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A foreign national also can enjoy tax exemption if he makes a donation to Indian Charitable Organizations in india provided he has taxable income in India. For a donation given in India, he cannot get exemption abroad in any other country. Exemption on the donations given to charities has nothing to do with nationalities of tax payers but only on facts whether they have income in India and whether they are liable to pay Indian Income Tax.

Can our association create chapters in different states and work freely everywhere with the same and only one IRS tax-exemption granted to the national association ? Or does every state chapter we will put in place has to apply and have its own??? Thank You. I'll appreciate your help.
Asked by Bob - Mon Nov 13 23:27:45 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What you do for this situation is you establish the non-profit entity in your home state, and get your IRS tax exemption determination letter for that entity. Then you register your entity in all the other States and territories that you plan on operating in. This is not reincorporating, just registering the presence of a foreign corporation. With each State, you will also need to aquire a State tax exemption. As part of the application, each State will want a copy of the IRS determination letter. So, yes this can be all done through a single entity with a single IRS determination letter. However, you will still have to file in every State you register in, and some of them will also require a copy of the tax return filed for tax-exemp [cont.]

Asked by inked girl - Tue Jun 5 11:03:26 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Normally sales tax is paid when and where the car is purchased, and then if the car is taken to another state, additional taxes are paid upon registration. However, military personnel purchasing a vehicle in Washington State are an exception, in that Washington State will not impose sales tax. The dealership will surely know about this and assist with the paperwork. From the Washington State Department of Revenue (edited for clarity): Military personnel may purchase and take delivery in this state of a motor vehicle, trailer, or camper for use outside this state without payment of retail sales tax if: 1. The military purchaser s residence or home of record is not in Washington; and 2. The motor vehicle, trailer, or camper is taken… [cont.]

Why are churches given tax exemption - why should atheists have to pay through taxation?
Q. If we give one type of business a discount (churches) on their taxes then we have to make up for that revenue by taxing people in other ways. Why does an atheist have to pay for religiosity? I think we'd all agree giving organizations that do ONLY charitable things should have exemption but why should others have to suffer through taxation for your religiosity?
Asked by Rev. Aaron - Thu Apr 9 12:19:11 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Churches operate as charities on a not for profit basis. I haven't checked, but suspect you will find that organizations like American Atheists also have tax exemptions as educational organizations so the godless and the believers are treated equally.

do illegal aliens still have to file a tax exemption form?
Q. i know an illegal alien does not have to file a tax return if they make less than 8,000 dollars a year but if the person does not even have a tax id number and makes less than that amount would they still have to file a tax exemption form and they don't have a tax id
Asked by mayo2009 - Tue Jun 23 14:37:07 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Thus the issues. An illegal alien doesn't have the write to work in the US. But they do anyway. If they steal an SSN and work under fake documents with a regular employer, they will also file a fake W-4. They can't put exempt if the job is expected to pay more than $9350, but single-4 won't exactly draw suspicion. (Many illegal aliens do file a tax return and turn the W-2 in with it.) If they work as a contractor, many will avoid filing the w-9 form, but if forced to, they'll put down a fake SSN on it too. If the payer catches on after the work is done, they are supposed to withhold 30% for taxes. Logically, the employer/payer is *always* supposed to ensure the person can legally work. However, if I hire someone to do yard work… [cont.]
