Various income tax systems exist, with varying degrees of tax incidence. Income taxation can be progressive, proportional, or regressive. When the tax is levied on the income of companies, it is often called a corporate tax, corporate income tax, or profit tax. Individual income taxes often tax the total income of the individual (with some deductions permitted), while corporate income taxes often tax net income (the difference between gross receipts, expenses, and additional write-offs). Various systems define income differently, and often allow notional reductions of income (such as a reduction based on number of children supported). From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Do we pay income tax to the state we live in or the one we work in? Q. I've never really thought of it because I've always lived in the state I worked in. I know someone looking to move to Portland,OR (where they have a huge income tax but no sales tax). Vancouver, WA is only a 15 minute drive away, so she's thinking of moving there (where there is no income tax and a huge sales tax). Will she pay income tax to Oregon because she'll work there or will she be spared because she'll live in Washington? Asked by britt426 - Wed Dec 19 17:48:44 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. VANCOUVER, Wash. Many of the jobs that anchor Clark County's economy are across the Columbia River in Oregon. But those jobs come at a price an Oregon levy that can claim as much as 9 percent of taxable income Washingtonians earn in that state. The tax long has been a sore point, with cross-river commuters complaining they must pay thousands of dollars to an Oregon state government that provides them with few benefits and no say in how the money is spent. When it comes to charitable donations, the General Income Tax Guide says to send in the receipts if you are filing a paper return. If you are filing electronically, keep the receipts in case you are asked to provide them. You will get a refund on these receipts if you otherwise had taxes that were payable (lines 420, 428, 435 would have to be greater than zero). Work out your tax return without the receipts first, and if either of these lines is zero, hold onto the receipts until next year when you can maximize the benefit from them. On a tax return, you can use donation receipts from any of the previous five years, as long as you haven't used them before. Q. I live in British Columbia (Canada) and I'm just wondering when you have to start paying income taxes. I am currently 14 years old and I'm planning on getting a job at tim hortons ( 8 dollars an hour). Do I have to pay income tax once I start? Asked by Hawaiian girl - Fri Nov 21 21:15:02 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. There is no age restriction on paying tax. Tax will be withheld from your cheque each week, and at the end of the year you will have to file an income tax return, which will likely result in all the tax coming back to you, since you will likely make less than the basic exemption amount (currently $9600 per year) The exemption means everyone makes the first $9600 tax free. If your yearly income is going to be less than $9600 for sure, you can make application to CRA (the tax department) to NOT have tax deducted weekly if you prefer, but it does need to be applied for, which can be a hassle. Incidentally, most Tim's won't hire 14 yr olds, but if they do, you will need your parent's written permission to work.
