Various tax systems grant a tax exemption to certain organizations, persons, income, property or other items taxable under the system. Such status may provide a potential taxpayer complete relief from tax, tax at a reduced rate, or tax on only a portion of the items subject to tax. Examples include exemption of charitable organizations from property taxes and income taxes, exemptions provided to veterans, and exemptions under cross-border or multi-jurisdictional principles. Tax exemption generally refers to a statutory exception to a general rule rather than the mere absence of taxation in particular circumstances (i.e., an exclusion). Tax exemption also generally refers to removal from taxation of a particular item or class rather than a reduction of taxable items by way of deduction of other items (i.e., a deduction). Tax exemptions may theoretically be granted at any governmental level that imposes taxation, though in some broader systems restraints are imposed on such exemptions by lower tier governmental units. Specific monetary exemptionsSome jurisdictions allow for a specific monetary reduction of the tax base, which may be referred to as an exemption. For example, the U.S. Federal and many state tax systems allow a deduction of a specified dollar amount for each of several categories of "personal exemptions." Similar amounts may be called "personal allowances." Some systems may provide thresholds at which such exemptions or allowances are phased out or removed. Exempt organizationsSome governments grant broad exclusions from all taxation for certain types of organization. As an example, the UK generally exempts public charities from rates, VAT, income tax, and certain other taxes. The exclusions may be restricted to entities having various characteristics. The exclusions may be inherent in definitions or restrictions outside the tax law itself. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Tax exemption? Q. I switched my tax papers at work so I was exempt. I needed the extra money for tuition. At the time, I was told I could switch it back for the following paycheck. I went to switch it back today and the lady in charge said that from now on they can only change it twice a year, July and January. I don't want to have to pay a lot in taxes, is there any law or anything about this? And if it really isnt possible to change, if I take the money that would have been taken out and save it in an account, will that be about how much I will owe in taxes??? I can't afford to pay a ton in taxes, please help! I am only 19, this is the first year I have to do taxes. The $200 extra made it so I had enough to pay tution without loans. Just a note. you can only claim exempt if you had no tax liability in the previous year and expect to have no tax liability this year. Answered by Mark S - Tue Aug 21 20:53:50 2007 Oregon state tax exemption for active duty military stationed out of state? Q. I am an Oregon resident currently stationed out of state for active duty military.Iit was mentioned to me in passing that because of this, I would have all state income taxes paid, redeemed to me at the end of the fiscal year. Has anyone ever heard of this? I tried looking it up but the closest thing I could find to it wasa exemption from property tax. Asked by Chase J - Fri Jan 18 21:46:19 2008 - - 2 Answers - 5 Comments A. I don't know about Oregon taxes, but usually if you are still a legal resident of a state, you still pay taxes on income earned during that year, even if earned in another state. What could happen though is that if you are stationed in another state with a state income tax, you'd have to file a tax return for that state and Oregon would give you a credit for taxes paid on the income to the other state. It wouldn't be a $ for $ credit, but would be the lessor of the Oregon tax on that income, or the tax liability for the other state. At the same time revenue expenses like telephone bill, electricity bill also can be claimed by the company as the substance of the expenses is relating to the company. it is to be noted that, any thing which is not specifically prohibited is permitted.
