What causes the temperature variations in our atmosphere?
Q. Starting from sea level increasing in altitude. The troposphere decreases with temperature, the statosphere increases with temperature, the mesosphere decreases with temperature, the thermosphere increases with temperature and then finally the exosphere decreases with temperature. Of each of the five layers, what causes the variance in temperature in increase of height? The weather cannot be the answer, becuase the weather is involved in the troposphere, this why you rarely see clouds at 39,000ft on your flight, the temperature at this altitude is constant in all parts of the world. Aircraft at these altitudes are above the weather, this is why you never fly through rain at these types of cruising altitudes.

A. It depends on where the heat source is for that particular layer. The troposphere is heated from below, mainly by the earth's surface. Convective processes occur here, and adiabatic expansion of rising air (and air that has already risen) causes temperature to decrease with height. The stratosphere is heated from above (absorbtion of ultraviolet radiation in the ozone layer). Convection processes can't occur here; the lower stratosphere is warmed via the conduction of the heat from above. The mesosphere is heated from below (the ozone layer again). Convective processes probably occur here like they do in the troposphere. The thermosphere is heated from above, as the small amount of residual oxygen absorbs highly energetic… [cont.]

How will increasing the temperature affect the equilibrium vapor pressure?
Q. How will increasing the temperature affect the equilibrium vapor pressure? A.Increasing temperature will increase equilibrium vapor pressure. B. Increased temperature will decrease equilibrium vapor pressure. C.Increased temperature has no effect on equilibrium vapor pressure. D. Depending on the strength of the intermolecular forces, increasing temperature may increase or decrease the equilibrium vapor pressure. Thank You!
Asked by Brian Jackson - Mon Apr 13 20:01:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the constraints. If in constant volume, the pressure will increase. If constant pressure, the vapor pressure will remain constant. If you are referring to a specific substance's vapor pressure, the vapor pressure will usually increase with temperature, all other things being equal.

When mixing salt and room temperature water, what happens to the temperature of the water?
Q. When you mixed room temperature salt and room temperature water, the mixture changed temperature. If you were to leave this mixture undisturbed for several hours, what would happen to the temperature? Please explain.
Asked by elliemae2891 - Thu Jul 17 06:31:36 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Actually The temperature goes down slightly as the NaCl dissolves and the crystal lattice breaks down to give Na+ ions and Cl- ions. If left for several hours the resulting solution would absorb energy from the surroundings to try and return to the initial room temperature.

What temperature do you keep your thermostat at?
Q. Just curious about the average temperature people like to keep their houses at. My friends and I often argue about what temperature is normal b/c we all keep our houses at different temperatures. Please include summer temp. and winter temp. That way the temps. will be more accurate instead of all being summer temps. or winter temps.

How would you regulate the temperature of this equilibrium in order to do the following?
Q. Ethylene (C2H4) reacts with hydrogen to form ethane (C2H6). C2H4(g) + H2(g) <===> C2H6(g) + heat (a) Increase the yield of ethane. lower temperature keep temperature constant (b) Increase the amount of hydrogen in the system. Raise the temperature. Lower the temperature.
Asked by nascarguru88 - Sun May 25 18:12:58 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. (a) lower the temperature. Doing this will cause the system to decrease in temperature (obviously). The system will then try to counteract this by shifting the equilibrium right to increase the concentration of C2H6. (b) raise the temperature. Doing this will cause the equilibrium to shift left in order to counteract the added temperature stress applied to the system. This causes the concentrations of both C2H4 and H2 to increase. A. 350 is good for regular choco chip oatmeal is a little trickier. it's 375 for temp, and you actually have to take them out after just 13 minutes while they still look slightly wet, so they will cool and dry chewy and nice.

What temperature to keep Jacuzzi during winter when not in use?
Q. I am leaving for a vacation and do not know what temperature to leave my Jacuzzi in while gone. It's in Tahoe (Nevada) where it's cold anyway and I do not want to waste too much energy nor to have it freezing when I come back. I do not know what temperature to leave it in. I am not sure how long the vacation will be. Maybe about two weeks or a month, something like that.
Asked by WIX - Sun Feb 22 15:18:27 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would turn it off entirely. There is no way it will freeze at this time of year. I'd bet it will still be above 50 degrees when you return a month from now. The temperature in the daytime in Tahoe averages above 50 degrees this time of year. It doesn't get cold enough at night to freeze an insulated body of water such as your hot tub. Bon voyage.

Q. One of our fish has white spot, what temperature is best and for how long?
Asked by Brendan - Mon Aug 27 11:23:51 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm inclined to agree with John E. I think that raising the temp does help, but the medication itself is what is going to do the work. White spots could as well be a fungus, but generally sounds like it's ick, without pics though, who knows. If you combine medication with higher temps, and I'd go with about 83-85, you should see that killed off much faster. JV

What temperature should my laptop be running at?
Q. I have a Toshiba A100 with an Intel Celeron M Inside, I wanted to know temperature should it be running at, normal temperature? I am using PC Wizard and it says it is 48 degress celsius, right now.
Asked by Nawaz S - Sat May 2 03:14:23 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That is a fairly respectable temperature for a laptop. If it has decent cooling, such as not blocking the fan intake and output it should be perfect. 48 is about what my HP DV8000 gets on heavy use so you should be fine. Remember, it is a laptop so it might not have the best heat flow design. Higher temperatures are not a very big worry. If it hits somewhere between 56-63 degrees Celsius then you should start to worry and get it checked out.

A. 65 to 72 is good for a baby. If you could just go buy a space heater from wal mart, 10 dollars. or have the baby sleep with mits. I would keep the room that the baby is in warm with heat though. I have heat here, but still have a space heater in her room as is is cooler in there than the rest of the house.

Asked by Darkshooter W - Mon Jun 2 13:13:51 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The simple answer is an aquarium chiller, but these are expensive, and I assume you are looking for a less expensive option. As others have suggested, opening the top of the tank can help. If you are afraid your fishes may escape (some are known jumpers), go to a home improvement store and buy some inexpensive plastic egg crate that can go over the opening. This will allow you to keep your tank open and keep the fishes in it. The next step would be to use a fan(s) to produce airflow above the opening. This is incredibly effective. On my 135-gallon reef tank (with hot high intensity metal halide lighting), keeping my temperature between 78 and 80 was as simple as installing two small fans (like the ones you can get a computer store to… [cont.]

A. You need to be very careful when it is cold. Even with sweats and tights it is easy to injure yourself when running very fast. The wind also plays a major part in how it feels outside. You can do distance work in very cold weather if you dress properly. I don't think there is a temperature where you would not benefit from training, it is a matter of how big are the chances of hurting yourself.

A. I've studied for the food safety test required by the health dept. 45 degrees F (or 5 degrees Celsius) is adequate. Eggs must be shipped and stored at 45 degrees. Other tan frozen things nothing is kept at a cooler temp than eggs. 36-40 is pretty cold and some things might start icing up on you. For instance cream cheese is ruined if it is frozen. It gets a grainy quality and looses it's creaminess. It is unpleasant plain and it will ruin a cheese cake recipe. Frozen foods should be at -15 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees F, duh. . .

A. Babies have a more difficult time regulating their body temperatures than adults do. I usually test the water with my hand. It needs to be warm about 90 degrees F (32 degrees C), not hot. Never above 98 degrees, as that could cause the child's body temperature to rise. You also need to have the bathroom warmer than would be comfortable for you, around 70 to 72 degrees.

A. 375 id just a tad to hot. Go with 360 and cook for about 10 to 15 minutes for 6 wing pieces. Your Rival fryer needs time to recover , or get back up to temperature after adding food to the oil.
